Jared Goff Opens Up About Emotional Lions Trade in Netflix’s ‘Quarterback’ Series

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff didn’t arrive in the Motor City by choice — he was traded by the Los Angeles Rams at a low point in his career. But in the new season of Netflix’s Quarterback series, Goff shares how that moment became a turning point he’ll never forget.

In a heartfelt interview, Goff reveals that when he learned of the trade, he feared Detroit would be a place for his career to “die.” But a phone call from Lions general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell changed everything. Fighting back tears, Goff described the relief he felt hearing their voices and realizing they believed in him.

“That moment of hearing them on the phone, knowing the opportunity I had here was special,” Goff said, his emotions captured by the documentary crew.

Holmes, who helped orchestrate the blockbuster trade, told Quarterback producers he knew Goff was the right choice to lead Detroit through its rebuild: “I had an idea of what we were gonna start going through, and I knew how resilient he was. I just thought he’d be a good fit for the journey we were about to take.”

The journey was anything but easy. After Goff’s arrival, Detroit posted records of 5-11 and 3-13 in back-to-back seasons before turning things around with a 9-8 campaign in 2022. By 2023, the Lions surged to 12-5, and last season they became one of the league’s best regular season teams with an impressive 15-2 finish.

Now, with most of his offensive weapons returning — minus trusted center Frank Ragnow — Goff has the full confidence of the Lions’ staff and front office as he aims to bring a championship to Detroit.
