When the Detroit Lions lost offensive coordinator Ben Johnson this offseason, a lot of fans wondered if the team’s explosive offense might take a step back. Johnson’s creative play-calling helped power the Lions to one of the best offensive seasons in the league last year. But now, it’s John Morton’s turn to lead the way—and so far, Jared Goff is liking what he’s seeing.
Goff spoke to reporters after OTAs on Friday and made it clear that Morton isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel. There’s a healthy mix of familiarity and fresh ideas, which is exactly what you’d want from a new coordinator stepping into a well-oiled system.
“Some of it is different. Some of it is the same,” Goff said. “He’s got a long background of stuff he likes, and he was here for a year through a lot of our success. There will be a lot of that carryover and some new.”
The veteran QB also added that even if Johnson had stayed, changes would have come anyway. “You always kind of add some wrinkles,” he said, noting that Morton has already put his stamp on the offense in a good way.
At nearly 30, Goff still has plenty left in the tank, and with a deep group of weapons around him, he’s confident that Detroit’s offense won’t just maintain—it’ll keep evolving. If Morton already has this level of trust from Goff, that’s a great sign for what’s ahead.
