Jared Goff Shares His Take on Ben Johnson’s Departure and Lions’ New OC

Detroit’s QB Reflects on Coaching Changes and What’s Next for the Offense

The Detroit Lions are heading into the 2025 season with major shifts in their coaching staff, and quarterback Jared Goff has now shared his thoughts on these changes. While most players are still on break, Goff spoke to the media during his appearance at the Pro Bowl in Florida, offering insight into the departure of offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and the promotion of John Morton.

Goff on Ben Johnson’s Departure

It’s no secret that Goff and Johnson had a strong connection during their time together in Detroit. Johnson played a crucial role in elevating Goff’s performance, so it’s understandable that the quarterback is disappointed to see him leave—especially since he’s staying within the NFC North.

“He’s a hell of a coach. He’s a guy that’s made a ton of difference in my career,” Goff said in an interview with SiriusXM NFL. “I’m obviously a big fan of his. I was joking with him. I wish he didn’t have to be in our division so I didn’t have to try to beat him twice a year, but, no, he’s going to do a great job. Hopefully, not too good, though, with us being in the division together. But, I’ll always be a fan of his, and we’ll always have a good relationship.”

Johnson’s move to become the Chicago Bears’ head coach means Goff and the Lions will now have to face his offensive schemes twice a season. While it’s a tough loss for Detroit, Goff remains appreciative of what Johnson brought to the team.

Excitement for New OC John Morton

With Johnson’s departure, the Lions promoted John Morton to offensive coordinator—a familiar face for Goff. Morton previously served as Detroit’s senior offensive assistant in 2022, helping implement the offensive system during Johnson’s first year as OC.

Goff expressed confidence in his new play-caller, citing Morton’s experience and history in the league.

“We were together in 2022, he was an assistant on our staff, and has done it before,” Goff said. “He’s been a coordinator before, has a lot of experience in our league, been around a lot of great coaches. I’m excited to work with him and see where we can go.”

Looking Ahead

Detroit’s new coaching staff has yet to speak publicly, but they are expected to address the media during the NFL Combine, which takes place from February 27 to March 2. Until then, fans and analysts will be eager to see how Morton plans to lead an offense that has been one of the league’s best under Johnson.

For Goff, the challenge will be adjusting to a new voice in his headset while maintaining the offensive momentum that helped Detroit reach new heights. With a blend of continuity and fresh leadership, the Lions’ offensive future remains one of the biggest storylines heading into the new season.
