The New York Jets appear to have their sights set on Aaron Glenn, the former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator, as their top choice for the head coaching role. Glenn’s name rose to prominence following the Lions’ heartbreaking loss to the Washington Commanders in the NFL divisional round playoffs, positioning him as the leading candidate for the Jets’ vacancy.

Per Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports, sources revealed that while Glenn left New York without officially signing a deal, the Jets extended a “substantial offer” and made it clear the position is “his if he wants it.”

Glenn, who was instrumental in transforming Detroit’s defense during the 2024 season, is also scheduled to interview with the New Orleans Saints later this week, adding another layer of intrigue to his coaching prospects.

Under Glenn’s leadership, the Lions’ defense excelled last season, ranking fifth in rushing yards allowed per game and sixth in plays allowed per game. His ability to strategize and develop talent helped elevate Detroit into one of the NFL’s premier defensive units, making him a hot commodity for teams seeking a strong leader.

The Jets, coming off a dismal 5-12 season that led to the dismissal of head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas, see Glenn as the potential architect of their long-awaited turnaround. New York has not made the playoffs in 14 years and views Glenn as the visionary who can end that drought.

Interestingly, Schultz also reported that Glenn flew back to Detroit aboard Jets owner Woody Johnson’s private plane after their discussions. While no deal was finalized, Glenn is reportedly already forming a potential coaching staff.

Lions quarterbacks coach Mark Brunell is rumored to be Glenn’s choice for offensive coordinator, assuming he doesn’t land the same role in Detroit. Additionally, Glenn may bring on a veteran defensive coordinator with head coaching experience and is considering former Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff for a key role, should he come out of retirement.

While the Jets seem to be Glenn’s first choice, the Saints are expected to provide strong competition. With his upcoming interview in New Orleans, Glenn’s decision has become one of the most compelling stories in this year’s coaching carousel.
