The Detroit Lions’ coaching shake-up continues as another key staffer is on the way out. With both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn already gone, head coach Dan Campbell has been working to fill the gaps. But the ripple effect of their departures is hitting the Lions hard.
Glenn, who took the defensive coordinator job with the New York Jets, is expected to bring Lions passing game coordinator Tanner Engstrand with him. According to Connor Hughes of SNY, Engstrand is likely to be named the Jets’ offensive coordinator.
Engstrand has been with Detroit since 2020 and was a key part of the passing game since 2023—right around the time Jared Goff’s play took a major leap. Under his influence, the Lions’ passing attack thrived, ranking second in yards per pass (8.5). He also played a role in the development of star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.
Detroit chose John Morton over Engstrand for the offensive coordinator role, so it’s no surprise that he’s looking for a promotion elsewhere. With him and Johnson gone, Goff and the Lions’ offense lose two of their most influential voices. Morton has history with the team but wasn’t in the building last season, making it unclear how his offensive approach will play out.
Campbell has done a great job developing his coaching staff, but losing so many key pieces at once is a challenge. The Lions still have one of the best rosters in the league, but their coaching turnover could make 2025 interesting.
And now, it’s official—Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports confirmed that Engstrand has been hired as the Jets’ new offensive coordinator. Only time will tell if Detroit’s decision to pass him over will come back to haunt them.
