After yet another disappointing offensive showing, the Cleveland Browns once again find themselves at a familiar crossroads — but according to Jimmy Watkins, the solution isn’t as simple as finding a new quarterback. In a recent piece, Watkins argued that before worrying about a franchise QB, the Browns need to identify and develop a different kind of player — one who embodies leadership, accountability, and consistency.
Watkins didn’t hold back when pointing out that the Browns’ ongoing issues stem from more than just underwhelming quarterback play. While Deshaun Watson’s performances have been up and down, Watkins believes the real void lies in the locker room. “Cleveland doesn’t just need someone who can throw touchdowns,” he wrote. “They need someone who can set a tone — a player who demands more from everyone around him.”
The Browns’ offense has looked lost through much of the early season, struggling to establish rhythm or identity. Despite having talent at key positions like Nick Chubb (before his injury), Amari Cooper, and David Njoku, the lack of emotional spark and leadership presence has left the unit flat. Watkins suggested that the Browns must first rediscover their edge, the kind of energy that teams like the Detroit Lions — their recent conquerors — thrive on.
“Look at Detroit,” Watkins noted. “They play with purpose. Every guy on that field believes in something bigger than himself. That’s what Cleveland is missing.”
Until the Browns find that kind of leader — a player who sets the standard and unites the locker room — Watkins argues that no quarterback, no matter how talented, will be enough to change their fortunes.
