Jonah Jackson on Joining Bears: ‘Thrilled’ to Reunite with Ben Johnson

Jonah Jackson is ready for a fresh start in Chicago, and the chance to reunite with Ben Johnson makes it even better. After spending four seasons with the Detroit Lions, Jackson has joined the Bears as part of a major overhaul of their offensive line. The Pro Bowl guard spoke highly of Johnson, now Chicago’s head coach, crediting him for his play-calling expertise and ability to bring out the best in his players. “He knows how to make things happen,” Jackson said. “Guys like playing for him because he sees the bigger picture, not just the plays he’s calling.”

Jackson, a third-round pick by Detroit in 2020, was a key piece of the Lions’ offensive line for four seasons, starting 57 games. He played under Johnson in multiple roles, including when Johnson was the team’s tight ends coach, passing game coordinator, and later offensive coordinator. The two often talked beyond football, discussing fatherhood and life off the field. Their strong connection is part of why Jackson is eager to help Johnson build something in Chicago.

The Bears acquired Jackson from the Rams in exchange for a sixth-round pick, adding him to a completely rebuilt offensive line alongside All-Pro Joe Thuney and new center Drew Dalman. Injuries limited Jackson to just four games last season, but now fully healthy, he’s ready to make an impact. Chicago’s front office, led by general manager Ryan Poles, has long been high on Jackson’s potential, dating back to his college days at Rutgers and Ohio State.

With a new coaching staff and revamped roster, the Bears are looking to take a big step forward in 2025. Jackson’s familiarity with Johnson’s system and leadership experience should be a major asset as Chicago aims to improve in the trenches.
