Kalen DeBoer Can’t Escape the QB Question — Not Even on the Golf Course
Kalen DeBoer was just trying to hit a few balls and enjoy a sunny day on the links at the Regions Tradition pro-am in Hoover. But even a round of golf can’t keep him safe from Alabama’s biggest mystery: Who’s gonna be QB1?
He’d barely gotten through a few swings at Greystone Golf & Country Club when a kid — decked out in a Hewitt-Trussville cap and holding a mini Bama helmet — slid up to the rope line for an autograph. DeBoer happily signed. Then the kid went for it:
“Who are you going to start at quarterback?”
Boom. There it was. The million-dollar question. DeBoer laughed. What else can you do when even the kids are grilling you about your depth chart during a charity golf event?
It’s the question that’s followed him from spring camp to every press interview — and now to the fairway. Wherever DeBoer goes, it’s QB talk, QB talk, QB talk.
But it wasn’t all quarterback debates and awkward shots. DeBoer soaked in plenty of fan love — even if it sometimes came with a twist. One woman darted past the ropes yelling “one pic! One pic!” A few fans dropped “War Eagle” heckles his way. One man even told him he was praying for him (which, considering the shoes he’s filling, is probably valid).
But it was the kids who stole the show. After the 12th hole, another young fan stepped up for an autograph — then hit DeBoer with another curveball:
“Are you Nick Saban?”
DeBoer cracked up again. “When Saban pulls up,” he told the kid, “you’ll know.”
DeBoer handled the chaos with the calm of a guy who probably grills a mean burger on Saturdays. He brushed off the Nick Saban mix-up. He laughed off the bad shots. After one errant drive nearly nailed some folks on the right side of the fairway, he walked over to check on them, snap some pics, and turn on the charm. One guy even offered him a cold beer. DeBoer politely passed.
Honestly, the man gave off big Midwestern dad energy all day — chatting with fans, asking questions, smiling through it all.
Oh, and as for that quarterback question? Yeah, he gave the kid an answer.
Was it Ty Simpson? Nope. Austin Mack? Not quite. Keelon Russell? Try again.
DeBoer looked the kid straight in the eye and said: “You.”
