Trouble in Paradise?
When Juan Soto signed a massive $765 million deal with the Mets, New York fans were buzzing. A slugger of his caliber turning down the Yankees to join the cross-town rivals? It felt like a turning point. But fast-forward a few months, and the buzz has turned into a bit of a murmur—and not the good kind.
Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay dropped a bit of a bombshell this week on his ESPN Radio show, and Mets fans might want to brace themselves.
“He is very, very glum around the clubhouse,” Kay said. “He does not have a hop in his step. He does not smile much.”
Yikes.
The Numbers Aren’t Lying
Soto had a rough series against his old flame, the Yankees. He went 1-for-10, including an 0-for-3 showing in Sunday night’s 8-2 loss. Not exactly what you’d expect from one of baseball’s brightest stars—especially one on a historic contract.
To make matters more awkward, Soto was supposed to be miked up for ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball,” but Brandon Nimmo got the call instead. Not a great look, considering Soto’s usually one of MLB’s more media-friendly personalities.
A Deal Too Good to Refuse?
Here’s where it gets really interesting.
Kay didn’t stop at clubhouse vibes. He dropped the real kicker: Soto wanted to stay with the Yankees.
“Why isn’t he happy? … He wanted to return to the Yankees. That was his preference,” Kay revealed. “His family said, ‘You are going to the Mets.’ … And they said, ‘You are going to the Mets.’”
Now that’s something “a lot of people don’t want to hear.” Imagine turning down your dream team and showing up at your former home only to go hitless. Brutal.
So What Now?
Let’s be clear—no one is doubting Soto’s talent. Even Kay admitted:
“One hundred out of one hundred times, the Mets have to sign Soto. And one hundred out of one hundred times, Soto is going to be fine.”
But talent doesn’t always translate into comfort. And $765 million doesn’t automatically buy joy.
Mets fans will hope this is just a slow adjustment period, not a long-term vibe issue. Because if the energy doesn’t change soon, this mega-deal could become a major headache.
