Detroit Lions safety Kerby Joseph has quietly become the heart of Dan Campbell’s defense—and the Lions locked him up with a contract that’s now being called the most team-friendly deal for a safety in the entire NFL.
Back in April, the Lions signed Joseph to a four-year, $86 million extension, which gave him the league’s highest average annual salary among safeties at $21.25 million. The deal includes a $10 million signing bonus and options through 2029, but only about $36 million is guaranteed, giving Detroit the flexibility to move on after 2026 if needed.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano praised the contract structure, noting the Lions can cut ties after 2026 having paid Joseph just over $24 million. That’s a huge win for a team facing upcoming big-money extensions for young stars like Aidan Hutchinson, Jameson Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, Jack Campbell, and Brian Branch.
Joseph, 24, was drafted 97th overall in 2022 and quickly made a name for himself. His rookie season saw him rack up 82 tackles, four picks, and multiple forced fumbles—making him one of just three players since 1999 with that stat line as a rookie. He followed that up with solid 2023 production before exploding in 2024 with a league-best nine interceptions, including one for a touchdown, and earning a 91.0 PFF grade—the highest among all safeties.
Beyond his stats, Joseph’s instincts and versatility have made him a leader and emotional anchor for the Lions defense. His ability to play both deep and in the box allows Detroit’s defense to stay aggressive while limiting big plays.
By getting Joseph’s extension done early and structuring it wisely, the Lions have secured one of the NFL’s brightest young stars while maintaining crucial financial flexibility for the future.
