Matt LaFleur has been waiting seven years to open the season at home. Now, he’s finally getting that chance — and against the one team that’s recently had the Packers’ number.
According to FOX Sports insider Jordan Schultz, the Green Bay Packers will kick off the 2025 season at Lambeau Field against none other than the Detroit Lions.
It’s not Aaron Rodgers returning, and it’s not former Lions coordinator Ben Johnson (now head coach of the Bears), but for LaFleur, it’s the perfect setup for a little revenge.
The Lions swept the Packers last season and haven’t exactly been quiet about it. From Amon-Ra St. Brown showing up in a typo-riddled “GreenBay Sucks” hoodie to Dan Campbell’s thinly veiled jabs on TV, Detroit hasn’t held back. But the tables may be turning.
Detroit enters this season without Johnson or defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, both of whom landed head coaching gigs. That leaves a bit of a leadership vacuum — and LaFleur has a golden chance to capitalize on it right away.
This isn’t just about payback. It’s about setting the tone for a season where Green Bay is looking to reclaim the NFC North. And it all starts with LaFleur’s long-awaited home opener — and maybe a little scoreboard justice.
