Sam LaPorta is still processing the loss of Ben Johnson, but he’s also looking ahead to what’s next for the Lions’ offense. While enjoying some time in Mexico for the NFLPA Classic Golf Tournament, the star tight end caught up with Kay Adams to talk about Detroit’s big coaching change.
Johnson, the mastermind behind the Lions’ explosive offense, is now the head coach of the Bears—a tough pill to swallow for LaPorta and the team. “It hurts, of course,” he admitted, but he’s also excited for what’s ahead with new offensive coordinator John Morton.
LaPorta has already had a brief sit-down with Morton, who was Denver’s passing game coordinator last season but spent time with the Lions in 2022. His first impression? Morton is fiery, competitive, and ready to get to work. The two will officially start building their connection when OTAs kick off, with Detroit’s offseason program beginning on April 21.
