Friends Turned Foes: LaPorta Sends Message to Ben Johnson
The NFC North just got a whole lot more interesting. Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta didn’t hold back when discussing his former offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, who is now the head coach of the Chicago Bears.
While LaPorta respects Johnson for his impact on his career, he had a blunt message ahead of their two matchups in the 2025 season:
“There will be friends turned to enemies.”
LaPorta’s words, delivered during an appearance on Up & Adams, add even more fuel to an already heated division rivalry.
LaPorta on Johnson’s Departure: ‘It Hurts’
Ben Johnson played a massive role in LaPorta’s early success. The coach didn’t just help draft him in 2023—he made sure the rookie tight end became a focal point of Detroit’s offense.
That decision paid off. LaPorta shattered expectations in his first year, finishing with:
- 86 receptions (a Lions franchise record for tight ends)
- 889 yards
- 10 touchdowns
His production ranked among the best rookie tight end seasons in NFL history. But more than stats, Johnson helped unlock LaPorta’s potential, using creative play-calling to put him in favorable matchups.
So, naturally, when Johnson left for Chicago, LaPorta felt it.
“It hurts, of course,” LaPorta admitted. “You spend a lot of time with these people, invest a lot of energy and effort and hard work together.”
Despite that, he understands the nature of the business. While he’s happy for Johnson’s next chapter, that goodwill won’t extend to Sundays in the fall.
Johnson’s Offensive Mindset Now Belongs to the Bears
LaPorta’s development in Detroit was no accident. Johnson schemed plays to maximize his skill set, lining him up against linebackers, designing quick-release routes, and capitalizing on his ability to gain yards after the catch.
Now, he’ll bring that same philosophy to Chicago, working with Cole Kmet and newly acquired Durham Smythe. The Bears may even draft another tight end to fully embrace Johnson’s system.
If his work with LaPorta is any indication, Chicago’s offense could take a big leap forward—especially in the tight end room.
Rivalry Renewed: LaPorta vs. Johnson in 2025
While Johnson’s presence in Chicago may be a win for the Bears, it also raises the stakes for the Lions-Bears rivalry.
LaPorta is eager for the challenge, and his message makes it clear: respect won’t stop competition.
When the Lions and Bears face off in 2025, it won’t just be about division standings—it’ll be personal.
