Legend Departs: Lions Nation Reacts to Suh’s Retirement Announcement

The Detroit Lions—and the entire NFL—are saying goodbye to one of the fiercest forces of the 2010s. Hall-of-Fame caliber pass rusher Ndamukong Suh officially retired on July 12, 2025, marking the emotional anniversary of his late father’s passing  .

Drafted No. 2 overall by the Lions in 2010, Suh spent five seasons in Detroit before moving on to stints with Miami, Los Angeles, Tampa Bay, and Philadelphia. His career résumé is one of the most destructive defensive resumes in recent memory: 71.5 sacks, 600 tackles, three All-Pro nods, and a Super Bowl ring with the Buccaneers in 2020  .

The decision to retire, Suh revealed, was deeply personal. It came on the day his father died, honoring advice to “let football go” and embrace the next chapter  .

Fans took to social media to express shock and gratitude. One post summed it up succinctly:

> “Best of luck, Ndamukong —Devastated doesn’t even begin to cover it”

“They can’t catch a break,” lamented another on TikTok, reflecting on yet another sudden star retirement for the Lions  . Reddit users were equally emotional, with comments like:

> “Such a great guy! Will miss him like crazy! Now he can focus on his health, family and enjoy some hunting and fishing more.”

While his prime was undeniably in Detroit, Suh’s elite presence continued long after he left Ford Field. And though he hasn’t played since 2022, the impact of his departure is immediate and heartfelt  .

Now stepping away at age 38, Suh transitions into a new role – hosting the “No Free Lunch” podcast to discuss life, finances, and personal growth  . His exit marks the end of an era defined by brute-force dominance—but also cements his legacy as one of Detroit’s most impactful Lions.
