The Mets just don’t quit. Francisco Lindor smashed a walk-off homer to lead off the bottom of the ninth Friday night, giving New York a 5-4 win over the Cardinals.
That blast was Lindor’s only hit of the game—but it was a big one. It also marked the 250th homer of his career. He admired it, bat drop and all, before trotting the bases.
The game was tied just moments before, when St. Louis’ Brendan Donovan homered in the top of the ninth. But Mets fans didn’t have to wait long for the fireworks.
This is Lindor’s second walk-off of the season. Earlier this month, he had a game-winning sac fly against the Blue Jays.
New York had been playing catch-up most of the night. In the fifth, Tyrone Taylor tripled in a run and Juan Soto followed with an RBI single to tie it up. Mark Vientos went deep in the sixth to knot things up again. Luis Torrens gave the Mets a short-lived lead in the eighth with an RBI double before Donovan answered.
Pete Alonso had a solid night, getting on base three times with a triple and two walks.
For the Cards, Nolan Arenado had a couple of hits and an RBI. Donovan kept his hot streak going, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. St. Louis had built a 2-0 lead early with RBI singles from Pedro Pages and Jordan Walker.
On the mound, Mets starter David Peterson struck out nine over 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas gave up two runs in under five innings of work.
Mets have now taken the first two games of the four-game set and have won four out of their last six. The Cardinals, meanwhile, have dropped three of their last four.
