The Detroit Lions have added reinforcement to their running back room, signing former Tennessee Volunteers standout and ex-Titans back Jabari Small, per multiple reports.
Small, who went undrafted in 2024, spent last season on the Tennessee Titans’ practice squad. Despite not seeing game action in the NFL yet, he brings plenty of college experience to the table. At Tennessee, Small rushed for over 2,100 yards and 24 touchdowns, showcasing consistency and toughness over three seasons in the SEC.
The move comes as the Lions look to solidify their depth ahead of the start of training camp. With Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery locked in as the top options, the addition of Small adds competition behind them, joining Craig Reynolds, Sione Vaki, and Kye Robichaux on the roster.
Small also brings some familiarity to the Lions’ locker room—he was college teammates with quarterback Hendon Hooker, which could help him settle into the offense more quickly during camp.
Analysts have praised Small’s burst and ability to find running lanes, though some scouts noted he’ll need to refine his vision and decision-making at the pro level. Still, his proven production and SEC pedigree make him a compelling option as Detroit looks to build a deep, physical roster for another postseason push.
Head coach Dan Campbell has made it clear: the Lions are aiming for toughness and depth at every position.
What it means:
Camp Competition: Small adds a new name to a crowded battle for backup running back spots.
Special Teams Value: His skillset could translate to roles beyond just rushing.
Chemistry Boost: His previous connection with Hooker may give him an early edge.
With the Hall of Fame Game fast approaching on July 31, Small will have a short window to prove himself—but in Detroit’s no-nonsense, competitive camp atmosphere, every rep counts.
