“Lions Ain’t Playing—They Just Signed a True NFL Survivor”

The Detroit Lions made it clear this offseason—they want to run it back with their core squad. Even though things didn’t end well in the playoffs, the team believes injuries played a major role in their late-season defensive struggles. So, the plan? Keep the key guys and take another shot at it in 2025.

That said, a few things have changed. Carlton Davis is out, DJ Reed is in. And vets like Za’Darius Smith and Jalen Reeves-Maybin are still floating in free agency. But this week, the Lions made another move—adding veteran linebacker Zach Cunningham, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

Cunningham, once a standout with the Texans, has been a bit of a journeyman since 2021. He’s spent time with the Titans, Eagles, and most recently, the Broncos. Last season in Denver, he didn’t see much action—just 15 snaps across seven games—but he brings a ton of experience.

Back in 2020, Cunningham actually led the NFL in tackles and landed a big contract in Houston. Things didn’t pan out there, but now, at 30, he’s hoping Detroit can be his next real home—and maybe even a Super Bowl run.

With OTAs kicking off Wednesday, the Lions’ coaching staff will get their first real look at him. Whether he lands on the final 53-man roster or ends up as a depth option on the practice squad, Cunningham could be a smart insurance policy—especially after last season’s injury chaos at linebacker. If things go south again, having a reliable vet like him could make all the difference.
