Lions Lock In Derrick Barnes with $25.5 Million Extension
The Detroit Lions are keeping one of their key defensive pieces in place, agreeing to a three-year, $25.5 million contract extension with linebacker Derrick Barnes. The deal includes $16 million guaranteed, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.
Barnes missed most of the 2024 season after tearing his PCL and MCL in Week 3, but the Lions clearly value his versatility as both a hybrid edge rusher and off-ball linebacker. He played a crucial role in Detroit’s defensive schemes before his injury and is expected to be a key contributor moving forward.
This extension marks another investment in Detroit’s successful 2021 draft class, joining long-term deals for Amon-Ra St. Brown, Penei Sewell, and Alim McNeill. With two more potential extensions on the horizon, the 2021 class is shaping up as one of the best in franchise history.
