Roy Lopez Joins Detroit to Add Depth and Strength in the Trenches
The Detroit Lions made a late-night move on Day 2 of free agency, securing a key addition to their defensive front. Former Arizona Cardinals nose tackle Roy Lopez has agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $4.25 million, per NFL Network. While not the high-profile signing some fans anticipated, Lopez brings valuable experience and depth to a position of need in Detroit.
A Proven Run-Stuffer with Pass-Rush Upside
Lopez, 27, was originally a sixth-round pick out of Arizona in 2021. He spent the first two seasons of his career with the Houston Texans before joining the Cardinals. Last season, he started 16 games, primarily at nose tackle, and made a noticeable impact on the field. His 2024 stats include:
- 28 tackles
- 1 forced fumble & 1 fumble recovery
- 3 pass deflections
- 3 quarterback hits
While Pro Football Focus ranked him 116th out of 219 interior defensive linemen, his pass-rushing ability stood out. Lopez recorded 18 quarterback pressures, placing him among the top 50 defensive tackles in that category.
Why the Lions Needed This Move
Detroit faced serious injury concerns on the defensive line last season, with Alim McNeill and Mekhi Wingo suffering ACL injuries. Although both are expected to return, their availability for offseason programs remains uncertain. Adding a durable, starting-caliber nose tackle like Lopez provides much-needed security in the middle.
Additionally, the Lions have been reshaping their defensive front, recently re-signing Myles Adams and Marcus Davenport to one-year deals. Brodric Martin is entering his third season, hoping to establish himself in the rotation, while DJ Reader is finally healthy after an injury-plagued year.
What This Means for Detroit’s Defense
Lopez brings a physical presence to Detroit’s interior defense, adding toughness against the run while contributing as a rotational pass rusher. While he may not be the marquee signing fans were expecting, he is the type of under-the-radar addition that can make a difference over the course of the season.
With the Lions eyeing a deep playoff run, strengthening the defensive trenches is a step in the right direction. If Lopez builds on his strong 2024 campaign, Detroit may have found a valuable piece to help anchor its defensive front.
