New Lions CB D.J. Reed Ready to Lead Detroit’s Young Secondary
D.J. Reed is bringing more than just his skills to the Detroit Lions—he’s bringing a mindset. The newly signed cornerback, fresh off a three-year, $48 million deal, is eager to share his experience with Detroit’s young secondary, including last year’s first-round pick, Terrion Arnold.
Reed, a seven-year NFL veteran, has developed a meticulous approach to preparation, inspired by players like Bobby Wagner. From nutrition to sleep habits, he follows a strict regimen to maximize his performance. Now, he’s ready to pass that wisdom on to his teammates.
“I thought Terrion played well last year,” Reed said. “I think he’s a Pro Bowl, All-Pro type of guy.” While he’s happy to mentor, Reed also embraces Detroit’s physical style of play, priding himself on his willingness to tackle—something not all cornerbacks enjoy.
His leadership and high standards could be a game-changer for the Lions’ secondary, which has been a work in progress. But make no mistake, Reed’s focus is on one thing: leaving everything on the field.
“I made a promise to myself—I call it ‘Empty The Tank,’” he said. “When I’m done playing, I want to be able to say I gave everything to the game.”
