Lions’ Chances of Landing Former Bears Pass Rusher Just Got a Boost

The Detroit Lions may be inching closer to adding a familiar NFC North name to their defense. Veteran edge rusher DeMarcus Walker, who spent the last two seasons with the Chicago Bears, met with the Lions last week—and the latest update gives Detroit a real shot at sealing the deal.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Walker also visited the New York Giants on Wednesday, but reportedly left without a contract. That opens the door wide for GM Brad Holmes to make his move, especially with Detroit still needing to reinforce a pass rush that took some offseason hits. With John Cominsky retired, Jonah Williams gone to the Saints, and uncertainty around Za’Darius Smith’s future, a savvy veteran like Walker could be the ideal fit.

Walker, a 6-foot-4 disruptor with 26.5 career sacks, has plenty of starting experience and could be a valuable piece in Kelvin Sheppard’s defensive scheme. The Lions have the cap space to get this done and would be wise to wrap things up before the draft kicks off in two weeks.
