Lions’ Choice to Part Ways with Za’Darius Smith Looking More Costly

The Detroit Lions made a financial decision when they released Za’Darius Smith before free agency, saving $5.7 million in cap space with no dead money. But as free agency moves into its third week, that decision is looking more and more questionable. The Lions have yet to make a major addition at edge rusher, instead re-signing Marcus Davenport—a player who has appeared in just six games over the past two seasons due to injuries.

Smith, on the other hand, remains one of the top free agents available. ESPN’s Matt Bowen ranked him No. 12 on his list of best remaining free agents, pointing out that Smith racked up nine sacks and 38 pressures last season while playing for both the Browns and Lions. Bowen also highlighted Smith’s versatility, noting that he can line up as a stand-up edge rusher or slide inside to create favorable matchups on passing downs.

For a Lions team with Super Bowl aspirations, having a reliable pass rusher opposite Aidan Hutchinson should be a priority. While the team could look to the draft for reinforcements, counting on a rookie to immediately fill Smith’s role is a risky bet. The fact that Smith hasn’t yet found the contract he expected in free agency leaves the door open for a potential reunion, but if Detroit is unwilling to revisit that option, they need to have a solid plan in place.

Letting Smith walk was a calculated move, but unless the Lions find a legitimate replacement soon, it could prove to be a costly mistake.
