Lions Could Shake Up QB Room Before Week 1 — Surprise Move on the Table

The Detroit Lions have become one of the NFL’s most-watched teams—and it’s not just because of Jared Goff or their playoff success. After losing both offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn this offseason, Dan Campbell is working with a revamped coaching staff in 2025. But now, another position group could see a major shakeup: quarterback.

According to Detroit Jock City, the Lions might be eyeing a surprise move to boost the depth behind Goff—and it could spell the end for one of their current QBs.

Backup Battle Heating Up

Let’s be real: Goff has cemented himself as the Lions’ franchise quarterback. But behind him, things get dicey. Hendon Hooker, last year’s third-round pick, hasn’t shown enough growth heading into his second full season. Meanwhile, newly signed veteran Kyle Allen hasn’t inspired much confidence either, with a 7-12 career record and an 82.3 passer rating.

That’s why some analysts are calling for a trade.

Aidan O’Connell a Fit for Detroit?

Chris Schad suggests the Lions consider trading for Aidan O’Connell of the Raiders. O’Connell, a fourth-round pick in 2023, got a decent amount of starting experience under both Josh McDaniels and Antonio Pierce. But with Pete Carroll now running things in Vegas, the Raiders may be open to moving him.

If Hooker and Allen can’t get it done with all the talent around them—Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jameson Williams—it may be worth using a late-round pick to bring in someone who can.

Or Maybe… Carson Wentz?

Another name being floated? Carson Wentz.

Michael Bohlin also wrote over the weekend that the Lions should consider bringing in a veteran like Wentz. While no one expects him to push Goff, having a proven vet as insurance would bring more stability than rolling with two untested backups.

Wentz wouldn’t be expected to play unless disaster struck—but if it did, he’s got the experience to keep the offense afloat. It’s a safer bet than trusting someone who hasn’t yet proven anything under real pressure.

So while it’s still early, don’t be surprised if Detroit makes a move before training camp ends. A surprise addition at quarterback could be on the way.
