Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn isn’t sweating the early-season growing pains — in fact, he’s expecting something big to happen soon. After a rocky start filled with ups and downs, Glenn believes his defense is right on the verge of something special.
“When there’s a breakthrough,” Glenn said confidently, “this thing will pop like we want it to.”
The Lions’ defense has shown flashes of brilliance but hasn’t quite put together a complete performance yet this season. Injuries in the secondary and inconsistent tackling have created some frustration, but Glenn insists it’s all part of the process.
“I’ve seen it before,” he explained. “You keep stacking the right habits, the communication improves, the chemistry builds — and then suddenly, everything clicks. That’s what’s coming.”
Glenn’s optimism stems from the growth he’s seen in key young players like Brian Branch, Jack Campbell, and Aidan Hutchinson, who continue to set the tone for the defense. The unit has been aggressive and physical, but Glenn wants more — particularly in the turnover department.
“Once the guys start trusting each other fully and flying to the ball the way I know they can,” Glenn said, “you’ll see the version of this defense we’ve been building.”
The Lions’ defense was a major part of the team’s turnaround last season, and Glenn’s fiery leadership has been a driving force in Detroit’s locker room. While fans may be anxious for results, Glenn is urging patience — because he believes the best is right around the corner.
“We’re close,” he said. “When that switch flips, everyone’s going to see what we’ve been working toward.”
If Glenn’s words prove true, Detroit’s defense might soon go from “good” to flat-out dangerous — and the rest of the NFC better be ready when it does.
