Lions Defensive Coordinator Kelvin Sheppard Sets Early Tone, Praises Rising Star Coach

Allen Park – Kelvin Sheppard is off to a strong start in his first season as the Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator. Despite being early in the offseason, the 38-year-old coach is already seeing positive results from a united coaching staff and players fully committed to his approach.

Sheppard stepped into the role after longtime Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn left to become the New York Jets’ head coach. Speaking with reporters, Sheppard emphasized the fundamentals he expects from his defense, focusing on assignments, alignment, attention to detail, and execution.

“This all comes down to knowing your role, being in the right spot, and then doing your job when the play starts,” Sheppard explained. “The guys have really bought into that culture, which has been here for a while, and now we’re fine-tuning it for the new system.”

Sheppard also spoke highly of Lions linebackers coach Hamilton, his former player, calling him a fast-rising coach with all the right qualities. Hamilton echoed the praise, crediting Sheppard as one of the best teachers he’s had in football, both as a player and coach.

Sheppard said, “Hamilton has the mental toughness, personality, and love for the game to excel. He’s earned great respect quickly, and I’m confident he’ll continue to grow in this role.”

As Detroit prepares for the 2025 season, the Lions are hopeful that Sheppard’s leadership and the coaching staff’s chemistry will translate into defensive improvement on the field.
