Lions’ Dreams of Myles Garrett Shattered: No Trade in Sight

The Detroit Lions’ hopes of acquiring Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns have been squashed by the general managers of both teams.

Brad Holmes, the Lions’ general manager, has indicated that trading for Garrett would be “a little out of character” for the team. Holmes’ approach to roster management has been focused on building through the draft and making targeted free agent signings. Trading for a high-priced player like Garrett would be a departure from this approach.

Additionally, the Lions may be more inclined to re-sign Za’Darius Smith, who was a good fit for their defense after Aidan Hutchinson’s injury last season. Smith’s experience and production would be a more cost-effective option for the Lions, allowing them to allocate resources elsewhere on the roster.

Meanwhile, Andrew Berry, the Browns’ general manager, has also expressed reluctance to trade Garrett. Berry has stated that the team wouldn’t accept anything less than two first-round picks in exchange for Garrett. This steep asking price has effectively taken the Lions out of the running for Garrett’s services.

Garrett, a three-time Pro Bowl defensive end, is considered one of the top players at his position. However, his contract, which carries a cap hit of over $20 million per year, makes him a luxury that few teams can afford.

With both teams’ general managers expressing reluctance to make a deal, it appears that Garrett will remain with the Browns for the foreseeable future. The Lions, meanwhile, will need to explore other options to upgrade their pass rush.
