The Detroit Lions may be in the offseason, but the action hasn’t slowed down. In fact, things have only intensified as the team navigates key coaching changes.
The Lions took a hit with the departures of defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn to the Jets and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to the Bears. With those crucial positions vacant, head coach Dan Campbell and his staff wasted no time searching for replacements.
Detroit Lions Announce New Coordinators
On January 20, the Lions officially named their new offensive and defensive coordinators.
“The Detroit Lions announced today the hiring of John Morton as offensive coordinator and the promotion of Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator,” the team shared on social media.
Both moves were widely expected, with Morton and Sheppard emerging as top candidates after Johnson and Glenn left. Now officially in place, they’ll play a key role in shaping the team’s draft plans, making their hiring a significant step forward.
John Morton’s Offensive Pedigree
Morton previously served as the Lions’ senior offensive assistant in 2022 before spending two seasons as the Broncos’ passing game coordinator. While in Denver, he played a role in quarterback Bo Nix’s impressive rookie season, which included 29 passing touchdowns, 376 completions, and 3,775 passing yards.
Morton brings extensive experience, having worked as the Raiders’ senior offensive assistant, the Jets’ offensive coordinator, and the Saints’ wide receivers coach. He also spent time with the 49ers and Saints in various offensive roles.
Kelvin Sheppard’s Internal Promotion
Sheppard moves up from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator after four seasons with the team. Under his guidance, linebacker Jack Campbell became the first Lions player to record at least 85 tackles and five tackles for loss in each of his first two seasons. Alex Anzalone also posted consecutive 125-tackle seasons under Sheppard’s leadership.
A former third-round pick out of LSU, Sheppard had an eight-year playing career with teams including the Bills, Colts, Dolphins, Giants, and Lions before transitioning to coaching.
The Road Ahead
With the NFC North shaping up to be one of the league’s toughest divisions, the Lions face the challenge of maintaining their momentum despite Johnson’s move to a division rival. Morton and Sheppard will have their hands full ensuring Detroit remains a top contender heading into next season.
