The Detroit Lions had a stellar 2024 campaign, finishing 15-2 and coming painfully close to a deeper playoff run. But one issue that held them back down the stretch was depth — especially after a brutal run of injuries left 13 players on season-ending IR.
That’s why this offseason was all about beefing up the roster, particularly on defense. And while that added competition is a good thing overall, it might spell trouble for some fringe players. One of those on the hot seat? Defensive tackle Brodric Martin.
Martin, a third-round pick from 2023, hasn’t exactly made a strong case for himself since arriving in Detroit. He’s suited up in just five games over two seasons, recording only four tackles and no sacks. Now, as the Lions restock their interior defensive line, Martin’s roster spot is looking shakier than ever.
With Alim McNeill rehabbing a torn ACL, the team brought back Levi Onwuzurike, added Roy Lopez in free agency, and spent a first-round pick on Tyleik Williams. They also have rookie Mekhi Wingo, who’s already turning heads and seems to have the inside track on a depth role.
Even though Martin reportedly dropped 14 pounds and is in the “best shape of his life,” it may not be enough. The Lions might have to lean heavier into linebacker depth or other positions, which could push Martin off the board completely — even before training camp gets underway.
Unless Martin shows up and dominates camp like never before, there’s a real chance he doesn’t make it to the season with the team.
