The Detroit Lions have made it clear they’re serious about strengthening their cornerback group this offseason. Since free agency kicked off, the team has already added three experienced players to their secondary.
It all began with the signing of D.J. Reed, brought in to fill the void left by Carlton Davis as the team’s new top corner. Not long after, Detroit added depth by picking up Rock Ya-Sin, formerly of the 49ers. Then came Avonte Maddox, who’s expected to play a key role in the slot corner rotation.
Despite these moves—and the fact that Detroit used its first two draft picks last year on cornerbacks—there’s a belief they might not be finished just yet. According to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, the Lions could still be in the market for more help in the secondary.
In a recent article highlighting the best team fits for remaining free agents, Knox suggested that the Lions would be a good landing spot for veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas, who most recently played for the Buffalo Bills.
Douglas would be a more prominent addition than either Ya-Sin or Maddox, but his recent performance could give teams pause. His 2024 campaign was arguably the toughest of his career. Over 15 games, opposing quarterbacks completed a staggering 72.9% of their passes when targeting him, and those throws resulted in a 122.0 passer rating.
That’s a stark contrast to the way he ended the 2023 season. In just nine games with the Bills that year, Douglas held quarterbacks to a 51.3% completion rate and allowed just 5.9 yards per target—a strong showing that showcased his potential.
The big question is whether the Lions believe Douglas can return to that 2023 form. If so, he could be a worthwhile addition to compete in an already loaded cornerback room. But with so much depth now in place, Detroit might be hesitant to roll the dice.
Still, in a league where quality corners are always in demand, Douglas’s name remains one to watch—especially if Detroit sees value in giving him another shot.
