The Detroit Lions are entering the offseason with numerous options to shape their roster, and speculation is already swirling around potential trade and free-agent targets.
The Lions have been linked to high-profile trade possibilities involving stars like Myles Garrett, Cooper Kupp, and Maxx Crosby. And those are just the top names—there are plenty of other moves they could make to strengthen the team.
One area that could see some changes is linebacker. According to an article from Pro Football Focus’ Mason Cameron, the Lions were named a top destination for San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who is set to hit the market this offseason.
Greenlaw has been a key defensive player for the 49ers since entering the league. He made an immediate impact as a rookie, recording 92 tackles. In his second year, he added 86 tackles despite missing some games. Unfortunately, injuries disrupted his third season, but Greenlaw bounced back in a big way during his fourth year, tallying 127 tackles and forcing two fumbles. His impressive performance earned him a two-year contract worth $16.4 million.
In his first year under that deal, Greenlaw continued to shine, recording 120 tackles and five tackles for loss. However, his season ended on a sour note when he tore his Achilles during the Super Bowl.
After spending most of the 2024 season recovering, Greenlaw’s future is a bit uncertain. Teams may be cautious about his ability to return to peak form, but that could also create an opportunity for savvy organizations like the Lions to land him at a discount.
The Lions may need reinforcements at linebacker, especially if Derrick Barnes leaves in free agency. There’s already speculation that defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is interested in reuniting with Barnes. If he departs, Greenlaw could be an appealing option to bolster a linebacker group that struggled with injuries and run defense last season.
If Greenlaw can regain his form, he might provide a significant boost to Detroit’s defense, making this a move worth considering for a team eager to make a leap forward.
