The Detroit Lions have built one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses, but they could be looking to add even more firepower in the 2025 NFL Draft. A new report suggests they may have their eyes on Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden, one of the fastest pass-catchers in this year’s class.
According to SI.com’s Christian Booher, the Lions could target Golden with the No. 28 overall pick. The Texas standout blazed through the NFL Combine with a 4.29-second 40-yard dash, showcasing elite speed that could complement Pro Bowl wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown and deep threat Jameson Williams. Golden also brings polished route running and reliable hands, hauling in 58 receptions for 987 yards and nine touchdowns in his final college season.
The Lions have a tough decision ahead regarding Williams, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. While his game-changing speed is undeniable, his off-the-field issues—including past suspensions—have raised concerns. If Detroit selects Golden, they could use the rookie season to evaluate whether he’s a long-term replacement for Williams or if both speedsters can co-exist in Ben Johnson’s offense.
With general manager Brad Holmes building one of the most complete rosters in the NFL, the Lions have the flexibility to go in multiple directions with their first-round pick. While some analysts believe they may target a pass rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson, adding another dynamic receiver could take Detroit’s offense to an even higher level.
