Lions Encouraged to Sign Proven 2,800-Yard Tight End to Aid Jared Goff

The Detroit Lions are determined to give quarterback Jared Goff every tool he needs heading into the 2025 season. While Sam LaPorta has emerged as a star tight end after a record-breaking rookie campaign, the Lions still lack reliable depth behind him in the passing game.

Jeff Risdon of USA Today’s Lions Wire suggested that Detroit consider adding veteran tight end Gerald Everett, who built a strong rapport with Goff during their time together on the Los Angeles Rams. “Once upon a time, Everett and Lions QB Jared Goff had a nice connection during their Rams days,” Risdon wrote, adding that Everett remains a capable receiver who can make plays after the catch, even if he isn’t known for blocking.

Everett has logged 2,869 career yards and 19 touchdowns since entering the league in 2017, giving him the kind of experience and red-zone presence the Lions could use. Though he had a quiet stint with the Chicago Bears last season, managing only eight catches for 36 yards, his proven track record could make him a valuable complementary piece alongside LaPorta.

LaPorta, meanwhile, is focused on elevating his game by understanding Goff’s perspective and learning the new offensive system under coordinator Johnny Morton. “Start to see the game from the quarterback’s perspective—what Jared needs exactly,” LaPorta told the team’s website. “Just seeing the big picture.”

While LaPorta is expected to remain the focal point at tight end, the Lions’ other tight ends contributed just 14 catches and two touchdowns combined in 2024. Bringing in a veteran like Everett would give Detroit another trustworthy target and add depth to an offense aiming to compete for a Super Bowl.
