The Detroit Lions managed to squeeze in a late visit with one of the most intriguing draft prospects in the 2025 class—Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo—just before the NFL’s Top-30 visit window closed. Despite having a top-tier running back tandem in Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, the Lions are clearly keeping an eye on the future.
Skattebo’s skillset and playing style align perfectly with Detroit’s gritty culture. The former Sacramento State standout transferred to Arizona State in 2023 and quickly became a do-it-all threat. He not only rushed for 783 yards and crossed 1,000 total yards from scrimmage in his first year in Tempe, but also punted, threw passes, and showcased his versatility on special teams.
His 2024 campaign was even more explosive. Skattebo finished second in the FBS with 1,711 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns, adding 605 receiving yards and three more scores. His breakout game in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals against Texas—where he totaled 242 yards and two scores—cemented his place as a true game-changer.
Described as the “running back version of Dan Campbell,” Skattebo topped Pride of Detroit’s “Grit Index” for running backs. If the Lions want a future “Thunder” to pair with Gibbs’ “Lightning,” Skattebo could be their guy—if he’s still on the board by the end of Round 3.
