It’s NFL Draft season, and while the Lions are busy building for a Super Bowl run, some of their fans are already acting like they’ve won one. Literally.
As Detroit preps to use the 28th pick in this year’s draft, a few Lions diehards showed up to Lambeau Field in full gear — including oversized Super Bowl rings on their heads. Yeah, not championship belts, not custom jerseys. Giant foam rings that read “SUPER BOWL.” Naturally, Packers fans had a field day online.
The Lions, of course, have never even been to a Super Bowl, let alone won one. So when those photos made the rounds on social media Thursday, the trolling came fast. And furious.
Was it bold? Absolutely. Was it trolling Green Bay in their own backyard? Definitely possible. It may have even been a playful clapback at Packers fans, who are known for their cheesehead “NFL Owner” hats. Or maybe it was a reference to Za’Darius Smith’s fake division title ring from a couple seasons ago. Still, the “SUPER BOWL” label kind of throws subtlety out the window.
But let’s give these fans some credit — confidence isn’t something this fanbase has always had. After decades of being the NFL’s punching bag, the Lions are finally a legit threat under Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes. They went 15-2 last season and made it to the NFC Championship Game. So maybe, just maybe, these fans are calling their shot.
If Detroit does make it to the big game next year, those foam rings won’t look so ridiculous after all. Until then? Expect more jokes from the peanut gallery.
