Detroit Announces Key Coordinator Moves to Strengthen Coaching Staff
The Detroit Lions have officially solidified their coaching staff for the 2025 season, announcing the hiring of John Morton as their new offensive coordinator and the promotion of Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator. These moves come as the team looks to build on its recent success and maintain momentum heading into the new season.
John Morton Takes Over as Offensive Coordinator
John Morton is no stranger to Detroit, having previously served as the Lions’ Senior Offensive Assistant in 2022. Now, he returns to take on the critical role of offensive coordinator, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record in offensive development.
Most recently, Morton was the Denver Broncos’ Passing Game Coordinator (2023-24), where he played a pivotal role in the success of rookie quarterback Bo Nix. Under Morton’s guidance, Nix delivered an impressive debut season, ranking among the best rookie passers in NFL history with 29 touchdown passes, 376 completions, and 3,775 passing yards.
With over two decades of coaching experience, Morton has built a diverse résumé that includes key roles with the Raiders, Jets, Saints, and 49ers. His background in developing passing games and wide receiver talent makes him a strong fit to lead Detroit’s offense, which already boasts significant playmakers.
A Michigan native, Morton has a deep connection to the region and the game itself, having played as a wide receiver at the professional level before transitioning into coaching. His familiarity with Detroit’s system and personnel should ease the transition as he looks to maximize the Lions’ offensive firepower.
Kelvin Sheppard Promoted to Defensive Coordinator
On the defensive side, the Lions are keeping it in-house by promoting Kelvin Sheppard to defensive coordinator. Sheppard, who has been with the team since 2021, has steadily climbed the coaching ranks, earning respect as a leader and mentor for the Lions’ defensive unit.
Previously serving as linebackers coach (2022-24), Sheppard was instrumental in the development of standout players like Jack Campbell and Alex Anzalone. Under his guidance, Campbell made history as the first Lions player to record at least 85 tackles and five tackles for loss in each of his first two seasons. Anzalone also thrived, becoming just the fourth player in franchise history to notch multiple 125-tackle seasons.
Before stepping into coaching, Sheppard enjoyed an eight-year NFL career as a linebacker, playing for the Bills, Colts, Dolphins, Giants, and Lions. His experience on the field and strong leadership skills made him a natural fit for coaching, and his promotion signals Detroit’s confidence in his ability to take their defense to the next level.
