Lions GM Admits Missed Draft Trade: Fans Frustrated Over Edge Rusher Slip

The Detroit Lions came out of the 2025 NFL Draft without landing a big-name edge rusher — and fans have definitely noticed. But according to general manager Brad Holmes, it wasn’t for lack of trying.

As reported by Mike Payton of A to Z Sports, Holmes admitted the Lions made multiple attempts to trade up in the draft, but they just couldn’t make it happen. Payton believes the team was targeting Texas A&M’s Shemar Stewart, who was ultimately picked 17th overall by the Cincinnati Bengals.

Edge rusher has been the top wish-list item for Lions fans, who are eager to see someone lined up opposite All-Pro Aidan Hutchinson. Without a blockbuster trade or a veteran signing (maybe even a reunion with Za’Darius Smith), Detroit is rolling into next season without major help on the edge.

Why Stewart? Payton points to the Lions’ top-30 pre-draft visits, noting Stewart was the only first-round edge rusher Detroit hosted. And aside from James Pearce Jr., whom Payton says the Lions likely weren’t considering, Stewart was the only edge taken between picks 12 and 28.

Though Stewart’s college numbers weren’t eye-popping — just 4.5 sacks in three seasons — his athletic upside screams All-Pro potential.

It’s worth remembering: trying to trade up and failing is a reality every GM faces on draft night. Brad Holmes has built a lot of trust with Detroit fans, and until he proves otherwise, there’s no reason to doubt his plan.
