Detroit Lions quarterback Hendon Hooker was once seen as a potential successor to Jared Goff, but now the former third-round pick faces a fight to secure his spot on the depth chart.
Lions Set Up Quarterback Battle
Hooker, drafted 68th overall in 2023, was initially considered a long-term project after suffering a torn ACL in his final college season at Tennessee. While he has made strides in his recovery and development, he has yet to cement himself as the No. 2 quarterback behind Goff. This summer, he will have to prove himself in an open competition.
Lions general manager Brad Holmes addressed the quarterback situation at the league’s annual meetings, making it clear that Hooker will be battling veteran Kyle Allen for the backup role.
“We like Hendon,” Holmes said, per USA Today’s Lions Wire. “He had the injury that first year, then last year was the first time he got a full training camp and season. We brought in Teddy Bridgewater last year because we were gearing up for the playoffs, and Hendon just wasn’t ready yet. And he understood that.”
The Lions signed Allen to a one-year, $1.27 million deal this offseason, ensuring competition at the backup quarterback position. While the team still believes in Hooker’s potential, Holmes made it clear that nothing will be handed to him.
“We still have high hopes for [Hooker], but nobody’s going to be given a job,” Holmes added. “If Hendon wants to be the No. 2 quarterback, he has to earn it.”
Hooker was initially viewed as a possible heir to Goff, but Goff’s strong performances in 2023 and 2024 solidified his status as the franchise quarterback. Leading the team to consecutive NFC North titles and securing a long-term extension, Goff’s command of the offense left Hooker in a developmental role. Last season, the Lions opted for veteran Teddy Bridgewater as the primary backup during their playoff run instead of promoting Hooker.
Goff Poised for Greater Leadership Role
While the Lions are sorting out the depth chart behind him, Goff’s position as the starter is unquestioned. Head coach Dan Campbell praised the veteran signal-caller, noting that the team expects him to take an even bigger leadership role after completing a career-high 72.4% of his passes last season.
“He continues to grow every year,” Campbell said, via MLive.com. “Last year, he mastered everything we asked him to do in the offense. Now, he’s bringing things to us—suggesting plays, recognizing looks, and making adjustments. That’s a sign of real growth. I expect him to take another step forward this season.”
With Goff firmly entrenched as the starter, all eyes will be on Hooker and Allen as they battle for the No. 2 role. The competition will be one of the key storylines to watch as the Lions gear up for the 2025 season.
