Lions’ Goff Fights Back Tears Recalling Moment Detroit Gave Him New Life

With Season 2 of Netflix’s Quarterback set to premiere July 8, fans got an emotional preview featuring Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff. In an extended clip aired on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show, Goff recounted the whirlwind feelings he experienced when he was traded from the Los Angeles Rams to the Lions.

For many players, being traded—especially just a year after leading a team to the Super Bowl—could feel like a gut punch. But Goff shared how conversations with Lions general manager Brad Holmes and head coach Dan Campbell quickly shifted his perspective.

“It brought me from this moment of picking up the pieces to feeling reinvigorated,” Goff said. “It felt amazing to truly be wanted and to have these guys behind me. I hadn’t felt that in a long time.”

Campbell also reflected on his first call with Goff, telling him how excited he was to build something together. “I just wanted him to understand how important he was going to be,” Campbell recalled. “We’re going to build this from the ground up, and he’s a huge part of it.”

Campbell doubled down on his commitment, saying, “That’s my guy. That’s my quarterback. Every head coach needs a quarterback if they want to succeed—and I’ve got one.”

As the conversation turned to Detroit’s opportunity, Goff became visibly emotional. He explained how much it meant to be the first big decision made by Holmes and Campbell when they arrived in Detroit, and how special it felt to try to reward their faith.

“To be able to prove them right—how great of an opportunity is that?” Goff said, fighting back tears. “It’s been incredible to build with them.”

The full clip shows just how much Goff and the Lions’ leadership believe in each other as they chase a new era of success in Detroit.
