Lions Hire Hawkeye State Hero: Tyler Roehl Brings Expertise.

The Detroit Lions are hiring Tyler Roehl, Iowa State’s assistant head coach and running backs coach, as an offensive assistant. Roehl brings a wealth of experience, having spent 11 years at North Dakota State, including five as the team’s offensive coordinator, and helping the Bison win seven Division I FCS national titles.

At Iowa State, Roehl was part of a successful 2024 season, where the team won 11 games, made the Big 12 Conference title game, and beat Miami in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. The Cyclones also had an impressive 2,247 rushing yards last season.

Roehl’s hiring is part of the Lions’ efforts to revamp their coaching staff. He’ll join new offensive coordinator John Morton and passing game coordinator David Shaw. Roehl’s experience coaching running backs and tight ends will likely be an asset to the Lions.

It’s worth noting that Roehl’s hiring might also influence the Lions’ draft decisions. As someone familiar with Iowa State’s program, he might advocate for drafting Iowa State receiver Jayden Higgins, who’s currently considered one of the top receivers in the 2025 NFL Draft.
