Lions Eyeing Rasul Douglas as Potential Addition Despite Crowded Cornerback Room
The Detroit Lions have been busy reshaping their cornerback position this offseason, bringing in three new veterans to strengthen their secondary. The first move saw the team sign D.J. Reed, a reliable replacement for former CB1 Carlton Davis. Then, the Lions added Rock Ya-Sin, who brings additional depth to the cornerback room. Lastly, they secured Avonte Maddox to bolster their slot coverage.
Despite these additions and the Lions’ investments in cornerbacks during last year’s draft, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox believes the Lions might not be done adding talent to the position. In his article on the best fits for the remaining free agents, Knox identified the Lions as a strong match for former Buffalo Bills corner Rasul Douglas.
Douglas, a more high-profile name than the Lions’ recent signings, had an up-and-down 2024 season. In 15 games, he allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete 72.9% of their passes against him, resulting in a staggering passer rating of 122.0. His performance came as a surprise, especially after his strong play in the latter half of the 2023 season. In those nine games, Douglas limited opponents to a completion rate of 51.3% and restricted QBs to just 5.9 yards per target.
The Lions could be intrigued by the potential to restore Douglas to his previous form, but the situation is complicated. Given the crowded cornerback depth chart, with Reed, Ya-Sin, and Maddox already in the mix, it’s uncertain whether the Lions would take a chance on Douglas after his tough 2024 campaign. Adding him could make for a highly competitive corner rotation, but it remains to be seen whether Detroit will pursue the opportunity.
If the Lions believe Douglas can return to his 2023-level performance, he could provide solid competition for a spot in the rotation. But with the cornerback room already full, the likelihood of this move happening remains uncertain.
