Lions Identify Key Area for Rookie Isaac TeSlaa to Improve

The Detroit Lions had one of the most talked-about 2025 NFL Draft classes, thanks in part to five trades made across the three-day event. But the move that’s stirred the most debate among fans is the Lions’ decision to trade up for Arkansas wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa.

To get TeSlaa, Detroit gave up the Jaguars’ pick at No. 102 plus two 2026 third-round picks — a hefty price for a player who never had a dominant college season. Still, the Lions’ front office is confident they’re betting on upside.

Assistant GM Ray Agnew recently spoke about the pick and made it clear why Detroit was drawn to TeSlaa. “The blocking, the hands — he was born to be a Lion,” Agnew told reporters, though he acknowledged TeSlaa still has “a ways to go” with his route running.

In two seasons at Arkansas, TeSlaa caught 62 passes for 896 yards and five touchdowns, including 28 catches for 545 yards and three scores in 2024. While some fans hoped a third-round pick would make an immediate impact, TeSlaa won’t face much pressure as a rookie. With Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams leading the receiver room, TeSlaa can focus on developing his craft, especially as a route runner — the key area the Lions want him to improve.

Looking ahead, TeSlaa could position himself for a bigger role in 2026, especially since Williams’ long-term future with the team is still uncertain. While the pick may have raised eyebrows, Detroit’s coaching staff seems to have a clear plan to develop the young receiver into a valuable weapon for the future.
