The Detroit Lions are reportedly looking to bolster their pass rush by potentially bringing back veteran edge rusher Za’Darius Smith. After focusing on strengthening their secondary in free agency, notably signing cornerbacks D.J. Reed, Avonte Maddox, and Rock Ya-Sin, the Lions are now turning their attention to the defensive line.
Smith, who joined Detroit ahead of last season’s trade deadline, made an impact in his brief stint with the team. Over nine games, including the postseason, he recorded 17 quarterback hits, nine tackles for loss, and nine sacks. Despite his contributions, the Lions released him earlier this year to manage salary cap constraints.
Now, as the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, Detroit is exploring the possibility of re-signing the 32-year-old pass rusher. According to Justin Rogers of DetroitFootballNet, discussions between the Lions and Smith are ongoing. While no deal is imminent, both parties appear open to a reunion.
Re-signing Smith would provide the Lions with a proven pass rusher to complement their existing defensive talent. Additionally, bringing him back wouldn’t preclude the team from selecting a young edge rusher in the upcoming draft, allowing for both immediate impact and future development on the defensive front.
