The Detroit Lions wrapped up OTAs this week, and while some key players were missing from full participation, we’ve now got a better picture of where things stand heading into training camp.
Wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown confirmed Thursday that he had offseason surgery on his knee — nothing major, just a cleanup procedure. He’s been on the sidelines during practices but says he’s on track to be “good to go” when training camp kicks off in July. St. Brown is coming off a monster 2024 season, with 115 catches, over 1,200 yards, and 12 touchdowns, so getting him back at full speed will be huge.
The Lions have been cautious with other players too, including rookies like offensive lineman Miles Frazier, wideout Isaac TeSlaa, and defensive lineman Tyleik Williams. All were limited or working on the side during OTAs, but head coach Dan Campbell emphasized it’s all about getting them healthy and ready for camp. Nothing long-term to worry about there, aside from a couple of known cases.
Linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez is one of them. He tore his ACL during the Thanksgiving game against the Bears, and according to Campbell, he probably won’t be ready until around November. Rodriguez has been a solid contributor on defense and special teams since being drafted in 2022, so his eventual return will be something to watch later in the season.
Cornerback Amik Robertson, meanwhile, is nearly all the way back from a broken arm suffered in the playoff loss to Washington. He’s in good spirits and expects to be cleared “very, very soon.” With plans to start at nickel alongside Terrion Arnold and D.J. Reed, Robertson’s return will help stabilize a revamped secondary.
Training camp is next on the schedule, and it sounds like the Lions are taking a smart, cautious approach to make sure key guys are healthy when it really counts.
