Lions’ Jahmyr Gibbs Earns Reggie Bush Comparison With Extra Power

The Detroit Lions are riding a wave of optimism heading into the 2025 NFL season after a franchise-best 15-win campaign last year. At the center of those high hopes is running back Jahmyr Gibbs — and he’s now drawing some lofty comparisons.

In a new ESPN ranking of the NFL’s top 10 running backs, Gibbs landed third overall, trailing only Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler compiled the list with input from NFL coaches, scouts, and executives, and one AFC executive summed up Gibbs’ rare talent with a striking comparison.

“He’s a lot like Reggie Bush, just with a little more power,” the executive said. “His size will always raise some concerns, but his speed, instincts, and game-changing ability are among the best in the league.”

Gibbs was electric in 2024, leading the NFL with 20 touchdowns — a big edge over fellow rising star Bijan Robinson, who finished with 15 scores. That production helped separate Gibbs in the eyes of evaluators.

But despite his standout year, some around the league believe Gibbs is best suited to split carries rather than serve as a full-time workhorse. Many point to his successful pairing with David Montgomery as the ideal setup for Gibbs to thrive.

“Some evaluators agree Gibbs is best utilized in a 1-2 combo,” Fowler noted. “While he can handle lead duties, there’s a concern he might wear down if asked to consistently take hits between the tackles.”

Gibbs proved he could shoulder the load when needed, though. Late last season, when Montgomery was sidelined, Gibbs carried the offense — racking up 365 yards on 64 carries over three games.

As the Lions gear up for what they hope will be a Super Bowl run, they appear committed to keeping their dynamic “Sonic and Knuckles” backfield duo intact. But Gibbs’ late-season performance showed he’s capable of being more than just a complement — he’s ready to be a game-changer on his own.
