Za’Darius Smith gave the Lions a serious boost last season when they needed it most, stepping up after Aidan Hutchinson went down. But if you’re holding out hope for a reunion in 2025, don’t hold your breath just yet.
According to GM Brad Holmes, there’s been zero communication with Smith’s camp since the NFL owners meetings. Holmes made it clear: the Lions couldn’t afford to keep him at his previous salary, and unless something changes, that’s still the case. Smith’s release cleared $11 million and wiped out the void years left from the deal he signed with Cleveland.
Even so, Smith hasn’t signed anywhere—and that’s keeping the door open, at least slightly. The veteran was recently spotted courtside at a Pistons game with Detroit rapper Kash Doll, which had fans buzzing on social media. But as of now, it’s all quiet.
Holmes says Smith’s agent knows to reach out if things shift, and with the draft just a week away, both sides may want to see how rosters shake out before making any moves. Smith’s return would bolster Detroit’s pass rush depth, especially with Marcus Davenport’s injury history and the team wanting to use Josh Paschal and Levi Onwuzurike more inside.
The Lions could address the edge position in the draft—this year’s class is deep—but a Smith reunion later this offseason isn’t off the table. Just don’t expect fireworks before draft night.
