Veteran QB Embraces Detroit’s Culture, Prepares for Hall of Fame Opportunity
As training camp ramps up in Allen Park, few players are embracing the grind quite like Kyle Allen. The 29-year-old quarterback, who joined the Detroit Lions during the offseason, is settling into his role behind Jared Goff—and soaking in every possible lesson.
With the Lions gearing up for the Hall of Fame Game on July 31, Allen is focused, energized, and motivated by the opportunity to contribute to a franchise with real championship aspirations.
Finding the Right Fit in Detroit
For Allen, the decision to sign with Detroit in free agency wasn’t just about opportunity—it was about culture.
“I’ve always enjoyed watching this organization from afar,” Allen shared after Thursday’s practice. “Especially since Coach Campbell and Jared [Goff] came here and built it up from what it was. When the opportunity came, it was just a great chance to be part of a team that has a shot at the Super Bowl.”
After stints with multiple NFL teams, including a recent season in Pittsburgh, Allen says the competitive spirit in Detroit feels familiar but fresh. “You hear training camp is hard here… there’s a lot of emphasis on it. It’s been hard, but it’s been great.”
Learning Behind the Lions’ Leader
Allen may be a seasoned veteran, but even in his eighth NFL season, he’s continuing to evolve. And much of that evolution is coming through observation—specifically of starting quarterback Jared Goff.
“It’s been fun being with him in a football and business environment,” Allen noted. “He’s super detailed, a hard worker… and I’m learning a lot from him. It’s cool to be around him.”
The two signal-callers share some history from their high school days and mutual friends, but this is the first time they’ve worked side by side in a professional setting. Goff’s experience and poise are helping sharpen Allen’s own approach as he battles for the No. 2 quarterback spot behind the Lions’ starter.
Embracing the Moment, One Snap at a Time
With the Hall of Fame Game looming and a crowded quarterback room that includes second-year QB Hendon Hooker, Allen is keeping things simple.
“Same way I’ve done it for eight years,” he said of his preseason mindset. “Play as good as you can play, control what you can control, and let the chips fall where they may.”
His impressions of offensive coordinator John Morton’s system are positive. “It’s a very high-level offense. It’s a lot of offense, in general—but it’s been great. Really detailed.”
Allen has also taken note of promising young receivers like Isaac TeSlaa, whom he expects to shine in preseason action. “He’s a hard worker, he’s fast, gets it… I’m excited to see him in live football.”
Ready for Canton—and Beyond
With a wealth of NFL experience but no shortage of motivation, Kyle Allen is aiming to make the most of every preseason rep. As he competes with Hooker for the primary backup role, his approach remains steady.
“Just prepare, go out and enjoy it, have fun, do your job, and move on,” he said about the Hall of Fame Game.
For Allen, this isn’t just another camp. It’s a fresh opportunity to contribute to one of the league’s most exciting rising teams—and to learn from one of the game’s most respected quarterbacks along the way.
