Lions Land Powerhouse Rookie RB Anthony Tyus After Stunning College Breakout

The Detroit Lions have added more muscle to their backfield, picking up local standout Anthony Tyus III after his impressive 2024 college season. Despite going undrafted, Tyus caught Detroit’s attention following a breakout year at Ohio, where he racked up 1,215 rushing yards, nine touchdowns, and averaged over 93 yards per game.

Originally from Michigan, Tyus spent three underwhelming seasons at Northwestern before transferring to Ohio, where he exploded onto the scene and led the MAC’s top offense. Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 226 pounds, Tyus earned a reputation as a bruising, powerful runner, finishing his college career with a streak of four straight 100-yard games, including dominant showings in the MAC title game and Cure Bowl.

While the Lions already boast one of the NFL’s best backfield duos with Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, Tyus offers intriguing depth and could compete for a practice squad role. Analysts point to his size, strength, and surprising speed as reasons Detroit took a chance on him. With Barry Sanders calling Gibbs and Montgomery the league’s top duo, adding Tyus gives the Lions another weapon as they prepare for a season filled with high expectations.
