The Detroit Lions’ decision to bring in veteran quarterback Kyle Allen has sparked some controversy, particularly regarding the future of second-year QB Hendon Hooker. While some view the move as a solid depth addition behind Jared Goff, ESPN analyst Ben Solak believes it sends a clear message: the Lions don’t trust Hooker to be the backup quarterback.
This isn’t the first time Hooker’s role has been questioned. During last year’s postseason run, veteran Teddy Bridgewater was brought in to take over as the No. 2 behind Goff, leaving Hooker on the sidelines. Now, with Allen added to the roster, Solak sees this as another sign that the Lions are hesitant to rely on Hooker.
Solak notes, “The implications behind the Kyle Allen signing…The Lions are making it clear they do not trust Hendon Hooker.” He believes Hooker’s chances of becoming a reliable backup anywhere are slim, suggesting the team might need to look for a new developmental QB.
However, not everyone agrees with Solak’s assessment. While the pressure on Hooker is undoubtedly increasing, some believe that Allen’s signing doesn’t necessarily mean the Lions have given up on Hooker. Still, with the competition heating up, Hooker will need to prove himself or risk being passed over once again.
