Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton is earning plenty of respect for his sharp play-calling and leadership — but it turns out part of his coaching style came from one of the most colorful figures in football history: Jon Gruden.
During a recent media session, Morton shared that his time working under Gruden left a lasting impression — not just on his football IQ, but on his mannerisms, too. Morton said that many of Gruden’s intense, animated coaching habits have found their way into his own coaching personality. And apparently, the Lions players have taken notice — and can’t help but poke fun at it.
“They love to mimic some of the stuff I say,” Morton laughed, adding that players often imitate his fiery sideline energy and classic football phrases straight out of Gruden’s playbook. “It’s all in good fun, but it shows how connected we are. They know I’m passionate about what I do.”
Morton’s relationship with the players continues to reflect the team-first culture that Dan Campbell has built in Detroit — one fueled by passion, personality, and trust. And if a few Gruden-style impressions help keep things light along the way, the Lions don’t seem to mind at all.
