Ben Johnson is hard at work assembling his coaching staff in Chicago, and once again, he’s bringing over talent from the Detroit Lions. According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears are hiring Lions assistant quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett to step into a larger role as their new quarterbacks coach.
Farewell to J.T. Barrett
Barrett, a standout quarterback during his time at Ohio State, joined the Lions coaching staff in 2022 as an offensive assistant. Over the past two seasons, he took on the role of assistant quarterbacks coach, helping to develop the team’s passing game. Now, he’s off to Chicago, where he’ll be directly involved in mentoring the Bears’ quarterbacks, including rookie Caleb Williams—a highly anticipated talent expected to play a pivotal role in the franchise’s future.
Barrett isn’t the only Lions assistant making the move to Chicago. Antwaan Randle El, the Lions’ wide receivers coach, will also be joining the Bears. He’s set to take on dual responsibilities as the team’s assistant head coach and receivers coach under Ben Johnson. These hires represent a significant shift for both organizations as they adjust their coaching staffs heading into the next NFL season.
For the Bears, these moves signal a commitment to bringing in coaches with proven track records of success. For the Lions, it’s a bittersweet moment as they see promising young coaches move on to bigger roles elsewhere.
